Independent distributor Screen Media Ventures has selected Web video platform Brightcove for its online video service, Popcornflix.com. The service started in March and offers hundreds of theatrical and independent movies to U.S. viewers, with Canada and international to follow. Popcornflix is ad-supported and has 200 films to watch for free, and aims to have 1,000 films by the end of the year. “Popcornflix is focused on streaming movies in the highest-quality digital resolution possible to ensure we are providing the optimal viewing experience for all of our visitors,” said Gary Delfiner, SVP of digital distribution for Screen Media Ventures. “Brightcove sets the standard for high quality in the video industry. The range of options the company offers for delivering ad-supported, long-form content across multiple platforms makes this an ideal partnership both now and in the future.” Brightcove’s platform provides the videos with third-party ads and the ability to share on social networks via links to Facebook and Twitter. It also extends the possibility of adding Popcornflix to mobile devices and connected TVs and set-top boxes, although no such deals have been announced.
Newly launched Web service features hundreds of great free movies delivered anytime via the Brightcove online video platform
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – April 19, 2011 - Brightcove, the leading online video platform, today announced that Screen Media Ventures LLC, a leading worldwide independent motion picture distribution company, has chosen Brightcove to support its new online digital movie platform, Popcornflix.com. The new Web service, launched in late March 2011, provides free access to hundreds of theatrically released and independent movies and is initially available in the U.S. with Canada and international to follow.
Popcornflix.com intends to have 1000 films available by the end of the year. The platform draws from its vast library of more than 1500 films as well as third party content owners. It is the first ad-supported movie platform of its size created by an independent distributor / content owner. Using the Brightcove platform, Screen Media is able to deliver a customized, high-quality viewing experience across multiple platforms, as well as integrate easily with third-party ad networks and servers to create new revenue opportunities for advertisers.
“Popcornflix is focused on streaming movies in the highest quality digital resolution possible to ensure we are providing the optimal viewing experience for all of our visitors,” said Gary Delfiner, senior vice president of digital distribution for Screen Media Ventures. “Brightcove sets the standard for high quality in the video industry. The range of options the company offers for delivering ad-supported long-form content across multiple platforms makes this an ideal partnership both now and in the future.”
Popcornflix enables visitors to browse and select from a wide range of genres starring some of Hollywood’s most popular stars through an easy-to-use interface. Thanks to Brightcove’s easy integration with third-party ad networks, each Popcornflix film includes pre-roll, spot ads and banner ads that offer content and advertising partners a valuable movie-viewing audience. Additionally, Brightcove’s social sharing features enable Popcornflix viewers to share their favorite films with friends via links to Facebook and Twitter.
Brightcove’s range of mobile video capabilities also makes it possible for Popcornflix to extend the reach of its video initiatives to mobile devices to ensure the broadest possible audience for its content. And, as Popcornflix expands to additional distribution outlets in the future, including Internet-connected TVs and set-top boxes, Brightcove will enable the organization to deliver the same high-quality, ad-supported user experience regardless of where the content is being accessed.
“Popcornflix brings a unique value proposition to the world of independent film distribution, and the service is well-positioned to expand and grow its viewership in a very short time,” said David Mendels, Brightcove president and chief operating officer. “This is an exciting partnership for Brightcove and we look forward to helping Popcornflix.com scale its video operations to reach new platforms and devices.”

“PopcornFlix — PopcornFlix is a new web service that offers free access to feature-length movies — most of them from independent filmmakers. Right now, PopcornFlix is available only in the United States, but the company is actively working to sign licensing agreements in other countries. The movies are free and ad-supported, and the library has a few hundred films and is growing. We mention PopcornFlix because it will soon be available for both Roku and Boxee, and it’s available via the web right now.” by
A new website, PopcornFlix.com, gives users access to hundreds of full-length feature films for free, and its business model could change the way people see movies online.
Theatrical film distributor of Screen Media Ventures is getting into the streaming video business with Popcornflix.com, betting on the idea that viewers will be willing to watch full-length films on-demand while sitting through a commercial interruption every 10 minutes or so. The site is getting its full launch tomorrow with a few hundred indie films and expects to have 1,500 movies available for streaming by the end of the year, said Gary Delfiner, Screen Media’s SVP of digital distribution.
While the movies are all-indie, they do feature a number of stars, such as Meryl Streep, Charlize Theron, Ryan Reynolds, Kristen Stewart, and others. Given that the films, which span all the usual genres of comedy, romance and horror as well as foreign releases, Screen Media believes it can buttress its main business of sending movies to art houses and cinemas by building an ad-supported VOD service that’s aimed at college-educated, upscale viewers. The ads for each film include pre-roll, spot ads and banner ads. As Delfiner explained in an interview, the mid-roll ads will run about every 10 minutes, meaning that users watching a 90-minute film will see about nine ads. It sounds promising, but most online video viewing is still comprised mostly snackable, 3- to 5 minute streams. Still, viewers are increasingly embracing longer form series, like those on Hulu. Of course, there’s also the expectation that “cord-cutting,” while hardly meaningful right now, will eventually become more common. Aware of the thorny ground Screen Media is treading with regard to programmers and movie studios, Delfiner said the company strictly abides by the windows set down by rights owners. “We’ll do some original releases, but we don’t see ourselves competing with the programmers or studios,” Delfiner said. “We will be on Boxee and Roku. Everybody, no matter which part of the entertainment industry you’re in, is interested in being wherever the viewer wants to be.”
An advert-supported streaming media service called Popcornflix has been launched, becoming the first of its kind created by an independent content owner. Crucially, the service is free for US consumers to watch and will allow users to watch a variety of films.
“Popcornflix is one of the few legal, free to the viewer, digital platforms with a dedicated focus on streaming movies while delivering the highest quality digital resolution,” remarked Gary Delfiner, senior vice president of digital distribution for Screen Media Ventures, the organisation delivering the streaming media facility.
According to the firm, there will be content available from a wide range of genres, including family, drama, horror, comedy and Spanish-language.
There will also be a social aspect to the service, with users able to share their thoughts on a movie via their Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Last week, Samsung announced its television customers will be able to use on demand streaming services on its new 3D products, with Shrek Forever After and Megamind among the first titles to be shown on the service.

“Online movies” and “free” rarely go together, but that’s the idea behind Popcornflix.com, a streaming entertainment site that just launched in beta. The catch is that movies are ad-supported. Still, if Hulu can make people watch multiple ads per television show, that shouldn’t be a deal-breaker. Popcornflix.com doesn’t have the premium content of Hulu, though. While it features several A-list names in its library of hundreds of films-such as Meryl Streep, Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, Melissa Leo, Alec Baldwin, and Anthony Hopkins-they’re in movies few have heard of. The best-known movie on the site currently seems to be Super High Me, comedian Doug Benson’s documentary on smoking marijuana. As for the ads, each movie includes pre-roll, spot, and banner ads. The site is a service of Screen Media Ventures, LLC, and borrows from Screen Media’s library of over 1,500 movies. Popcornflix.com plans to expand internationally this year, and to make its content available on set-top boxes, connected TVs, and connected DVD players. It also plans to grow its film library to over 1,000 titles by the end of the year. “Popcornflix is one of the few legal, free to the viewer, digital platforms with a dedicated focus on streaming movies while delivering the highest quality digital resolution for the optimal viewing experience,” says Gary Delfiner, senior vice president of digital distribution for Screen Media Ventures.
